About Us

Ignite BC’s mission is to build a thriving community base in Battle Creek through engaging social gatherings, enriching professional events, and community impact activities.

What We Do

Engaging and enriching activities are made possible by our committee members who are charged with planning and communicating things they would like to see and do in our community.

Steering Committee

The Ignite BC Steering Committee is responsible for the oversight and advancement of the organization.  This includes leadership positions on the 4 Ignite BC Committees.  Meet the current Ignite BC Steering Committee!

Kayla Thompson

As a founding member of Ignite BC, Kayla is passionate about building relationships and bettering the community. Kayla’s small town upbringing motivated her venture to many big cities before finding her place closer to home. Kayla is a graduate of University of Michigan (Go Blue!) and Wayne State University Law School in Detroit where she received her Juris Doctorate. Kayla carries out her passion for helping others by assisting individuals with their business and estate planning needs at a local law firm. Kayla thrives on collaborating with individuals, businesses and organization to bring new and innovative ideas to the community. When not in the office, Kayla can be found crafting, traveling, and dreaming up crazy business ideas.

Adam Kingston

Along with the current Steering Committee, Adam was a founding member of Ignite BC.  He is a graduate of Michigan State University, where he studied Secondary Education.  While the sun is up, Adam works as a Program Officer at the Battle Creek Community Foundation overseeing several grantmaking committees, developing relationships with local donors, and staffing the impact investment committee. In his free time, Adam is an active runner, craft beer enthusiast, and loves to play and watch all sports.  On a Saturday afternoon, you might catch him out on one of the local disc golf courses in Battle Creek!  “We hope Ignite BC provides everyone a platform to be themselves, both personally and professionally.  We’re so lucky to live, work and play in Battle Creek during this exciting time.  We look forward to creating with you!”

Cody Newman

Cody is a resident and business owner in downtown Battle Creek. He is an Architect, who operates his own firm, Driven Design Studio. He is also a Co-Founder of Restore (269), a local building restoration and development company. He sees Ignite BC as a catalyst to create synergy within the community. Along with the Ignite BC Steering Committee, Cody heads the Marketing Committee. In addition to Ignite BC he volunteers on the Battle Creek Planning Commission, Historic District Commission, Battle Creek Whitewater Committee, and Battle Creek Community Foundation Scholarship Committee. When Cody is not working or volunteering he enjoys puppies and long walks on the beach.

Cameron Cummins

Born and raised in Battle Creek, Cam is on the steering and fundraising committees of Ignite BC, and also participates with many other community focused nonprofits. When punched in, Cam is an Employee Benefits Advisor at Rose Street Advisors working alongside CEOs, CFOs, CHROs, and business owners to implement and maintain outcome-driven benefit programs. For fun you can find Cam cooking, playing various sports poorly, asking people to have coffee with him, or watching the Red Wings with his dogs. “You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want” Zig Ziglar

Amy Wesaw

Amy is a wife and mother of two small children. She is an attorney practicing in employment, municipal, and American Indian Law. Amy both works and plays in Battle Creek, her favorite of which is rooting for her son’s BC Bruins hockey team. Amy also regularly attends tribal community events, including at Athens-based Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi. She believes in Battle Creek and supports all efforts to reinforce its integrity, diversity, and opportunity, while making it thrive for the next generation.

Caitlynn Newman

Caitlynn moved back to Battle Creek and became an early member of Ignite BC hearing the demand for more things to do and connections to be made in the community. She currently assists with the Social and Service Committee and the Marketing Committee. Caitlynn is a Social Worker who attended the University of Michigan. She is a Co-Founder of Restore (269), a local building restoration and development company, and Owner of the Record Box building development. Caitlynn’s passion and expertise is community development, creating thriving communities and breaking down barriers that prevent growth. When Caitlynn’s sleeves are not rolled up from working on building restorations, you will likely spot her walking downtown with her dog, kayaking, or patroning the local coffee shops.

Fundraising & Friendraising

Ignite BC wouldn’t be possible without these guys and gals! This committee is responsible for raising funds AND friends which make our events possible. Nobody likes an empty bank account or an unattended event.

Social & Service

These two go together like wine & cheese, peanut butter & jelly, milk & cookies. A group without a purpose is no fun, so we have decided to join forces to make sure our social gatherings are always enriching and our service events are always entertaining.

Professional Development

Professional Development

Let’s face it - we all have to work for something. The common goal, however, is to work smarter, not harder. Our Professional Development committee knows business like the back of their hand. We rely on them to bring us engaging seminars, speakers, and workshops that aim to expand our members personally and professionally.
